I’ve worked in many forms of media: television, magazines, podcasting, and radio. I spent five years working on HIS Morning Crew, the morning show on HIS Radio. HIS Radio is a Christian radio station that airs across the Carolinas and coastal Georgia.

What It’s Like to Work in Radio

Working at HIS Radio is where I developed skills for communicating on the fly, producing a 3-hour daily program, and getting up super early. (My alarm went off at 3:56am every morning!) Even though my last day on air officially at HIS Radio was in 2019, I am still an early riser and usually don’t require an alarm to wake up. I gained an appreciation for the quietness of those early morning hours, and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with checking off your to-do list before most people get out of bed.

Putting My Stamp on The Morning Show

I loved sharing my passions with our audience. I tried to be very open and real. For me, that also meant having a lot of fun, because as a friend likes to say, seriousness is not a fruit of the spirit. Highlights for me were a regular segment I did called “Discount Grocery Store Discoveries.” I would find crazy, bizarre things at my favorite discount grocery store and bring them into the studio for my co-hosts to try. Sometimes the food was slightly expired, sometimes it was from another culture and sometimes it was just plain weird! I also enjoyed sharing stories about my son Sammy and our journey to adopt our daughter, Phaniella. Many listeners prayed throughout our adoption process and celebrated when we were finally able to bring Phani home.

Surprises are the Best!

One of my favorite things to do on the morning show was to orchestrate surprises. I loved surprising deserving moms, struggling families or even unsuspecting artists who thought they were showing up for a run-of-the-mill interview. There was no such thing when I was involved! Every year I surprised a special mom on Mother’s Day with a variety of gifts. One year we surprised Tina from her hospital room, a mom about to receive a transplant:
